Not sure which dog is right for you? Our professional dog trainers built this free dog breed quiz around the questions we ask every client before they bring a dog home. Why Dog Academy built this quiz
Dog Academy is a professional dog training company. Our trainers work with thousands of dogs every year through our online courses, video library and in-person training network, and a large share of the behaviour problems we are hired to fix trace back to one decision: a breed that never fit the owner’s life. A working-line herding dog in a one-bedroom apartment, a guardian breed with a first-time owner, a heavy-coated dog in a home with allergies. Those cases are what this quiz exists to prevent.
So this is not a personality quiz. The 10 questions mirror the intake assessment our trainers run with new clients, and the breed profiles behind it score each of the 401 breeds on the 11 factors our trainers see decide success or failure in a home: size, energy, grooming, shedding, trainability, kid-friendliness, apartment suitability, barking, first-time-owner friendliness, tolerance for being alone, and protective instinct. The weighting is ours, built from training experience rather than copied from a breed-registry chart.
How our trainers score your matches
Each answer sets a target on one or more of the 11 factors above. We score every breed against your profile, weighting the factors our trainers rank as hardest to fix later (energy level, kid-friendliness, first-time-owner friendliness and size) more heavily than the ones that are mostly a matter of preference. The five closest matches are shown with the factors that fit well and the ones to think about before you commit.
Treat your results as a trainer’s shortlist, not a verdict. Individual dogs vary, and a well-raised rescue of a “harder” breed can be an easier companion than a poorly socialised puppy of an “easy” one. Meet the dog, talk to the breeder or rescue, and plan for training from day one. If you want a second opinion on a specific dog, our trainers near you run exactly that assessment in person.

Dog breed quiz FAQ
What is the best dog breed for a first-time owner?
Breeds that score high on trainability and tolerance for mistakes make the easiest first dogs: Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Frise, Poodle and many Poodle mixes such as the Cavapoo and Goldendoodle. Answer “This will be my first dog” in the quiz and these rise to the top.
Which dog breeds are best for apartments?
Quiet, lower-energy dogs that do not need a yard suit apartment life: French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Greyhound (surprisingly lazy indoors), Shih Tzu, Boston Terrier, Havanese and Bichon Frise. The quiz weighs home type, barking and energy together so you get breeds that fit all three.
Which dogs are good with young children?
Patient, sturdy, people-oriented breeds tend to do best: Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Beagle, Boxer, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Supervision and early socialisation matter more than breed, so choose a temperament that forgives clumsy toddler handling.
Are any dog breeds really hypoallergenic?
No dog is 100% hypoallergenic, but low-shedding coats release far less dander into your home. Poodles, Bichon Frise, Portuguese Water Dog, Schnauzers, Lagotto Romagnolo and most “doodle” mixes are the usual choices. Select the allergy option in the shedding question and the quiz filters strongly for these coats.
Should I adopt a dog or buy a puppy?
Both can work. Adoption gives a dog a second chance and adult rescues often come house-trained with a known temperament. A puppy from a responsible breeder gives you a predictable breed background and the chance to shape habits from the start. Each quiz result links to adoptable dogs and puppies for sale for that breed so you can compare.
How accurate is the dog breed quiz?
The quiz compares your answers against trait profiles for 401 breeds using the 11 lifestyle factors our trainers assess with new clients. It is a professional shortlist, not a guarantee. Read the full breed guide for each match and, where possible, spend time with the breed before you decide.
Who made this quiz?
Dog Academy’s professional dog trainers. The questions are based on the intake assessment we run before training a new client’s dog, and the breed scoring reflects what we see work and fail in real homes, not a generic breed chart.
