Meet keanu
Keanu ACCT-A-241953 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Keanu must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER, or RESCUE PARTNER by SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21st by 10:00 am. Should Keanu's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted. If you are interested in an animal please contact ACCT Philly immediately. Keanu came to ACCT as a stray when a police officer noticed him out and about on his own. He's a little confused about being in the shelter, the kennels are not his favorite, and it hasn't been the best place for him to meet new dog friends, but he really likes his humans the best.
Behavior Notes
Behavior Eval, 1/28 :
Kennel Presentation: At the front of the crate with soft eyes, ears to the side and tail down. Took a treat gently through the bars.
Leash Skills: When I opened the crate to leash up, his ears went back head lowered and wide eyes. I did a treat lure to leash up. Once on the leashed up he came out and whole body loosened up. Play bowing, butt tucking scooting around playfully. Pulls mildly on the leash.
Sociability: Very social. Allowed all handling. leaned into pets and then would jump up on me pawing at me with ears to the side, relaxed open mouth and loose body.
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: n/a
Return to Kennel: Did not want to go into kennel. Tossed treats and tried leash pressure but he started to back up. Had to pick him up and place him in the kennel.
1/30 He came right up to the kennel when I approached and had a loose and wiggly body, jumping up on the door. I easily looped the leash around him and he hopped right out of the kennel with some pulling, but always checking back in with me. Outside, we saw a dog and he had his hackles up and was growling however allowed me to guide him away. Super affectionate with me and checking in with me frequently! Seems nervous where he will back away from me mid interaction and start lip licking but still soliciting more affection. Very submissive! He seems to be an unsure young pup. Got jumpy when he got overstimulated and would start gently mouthing. Frequently laid down or backed down when he got nervous. Needed some leash pressure going back into kennel.
2/7 Took Keanu out for an adoption meet. He was easy to leash and hopped out of his kennel with no issues. Once we got into the adoption room, his tail was tucked, he lowered his body to the ground submissively, and his ears were pinned back. He slowly approached the family and then cuddled up to them. He allowed handling from them but was consistently stress panting with his ears pinned back during the whole meet. At times, he would get overstimulated and start to get zoomy, but then would go back to the family and allow handling. He was very sweet with the potential adopters and even attempted to climb into their lap, but he was nervous, and they went slow with him, which allowed him to slowly start to come out of his shell. I had no issues returning to kennel as he hopped right in.
Walk Sheet memos:
1/28: Mild issues leashing and exiting kennel, was a little shy. Was moderately jumpy walking through kennels out of excitement. Had to be picked up to go back into kennel. Medium/High energy.
1/30: Moderately shy but no issues leashing, exiting kennel or walking. Mild jumpiness while outside. Medium energy just sweet and unsure.
2/3: Mildly shy but no issues leashing, exiting or entering kennel walking on leash other than some moderate jumpiness out with staff. Noted to be doing better than days prior. Was super sweet and put his head in their lap.
2/8: Went our for a meet and was easy to leash, exit and enter kennel and walked well. Some stress signs shown, lip licking, panting ears pinned back. Was also nervous in meet as well but allowed handling.

Loose wiggly body while leashing. Gentle pant, ears back.
Leash Skills: jumps repeatedly and pulls moderately. Mostly jumps around me, with paws touching me on occasion. Offered a treat, took it then dropped it.
Sociability: highly social and handler oriented- checked in often. When touching would gently mouth my hands with tongue hanging loosely, soft eyes, ears back and tail middle wagging- touching triggered jumping, except when touching on his chest. He would close his mouth, lip-lick, ears go back, and melted into the touch.
Play: did not do
Dog Interaction: met Heaven. Snarled, up close would muzzle- punch fence, snarling, bark and growl. Redirectable with leash pressure and verbal cues. Tail was tucked initially and then down wagging stiffly.
Return to Kennel: easy, hopped right in!
Recommendations and considerations: dog
May have some hyperactivity that needs to be addressed, difficult to know if it’s shelter specific or not, if persisting outside of the shelter should be addressed with training and a veterinarian.
Keanu has enjoyed enrichment activities like puzzle bowls, frisbees, and LickiMats. Scents like vanilla and chamomile can help him relax, while myrrh and rosemary might be great for other times of the day.
We think that Keanu would make an excellent one-on-one buddy, but forming a strong bond with a person who can prioritize his decompression may also be able to help make slow introductions with other dogs a positive experience.
Medical Notes
On 2/1, Keanu was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection, however, as of 2/14, he has finished his medication and tested negative for pneumovirus.
