Charlie came to Doxie By Proxy after his mom passed away, and this sweet senior gentleman is ready to find someone new to love.Don't let the number 12 fool you. Charlie is incredibly spry for his age! He loves going for walks, running around and enjoying life. He’s definitely not training for a marathon, but put him in a 40-yard dash and we’re pretty sure he’d bring home the trophy. Once he's inside, though, Charlie is all about the mellow life. His favorite activities include finding cozy places to snuggle, burrowing under blankets and curling up right beside you on the couch. And if there happens to be a laundry basket available? Even better. Apparently clean clothes make an excellent dachshund bed.Charlie is a people dog and really likes having his person nearby. He even prefers a little company while he eats. Mostly, he just wants to know you're there.This gentle boy gets along well with dogs of all sizes and is also cat friendly. He walks beautifully on a leash, is crate trained and is housetrained when kept on a good schedule. Because of his sweet, gentle nature, we think Charlie would do well in a home with children over 8. Visiting younger children should be fine with appropriate supervision.And then there's Charlie's smile. Charlie has exactly one tooth left, which means his tongue hangs out in the most ridiculously adorable way. Charlie has received quite a bit of medical care since coming to us. He has been neutered and had fistulas repaired, and we've helped him gain some much-needed weight. He's looking much better, although we'd still like to see him put on a little more.We also removed a mass from Charlie's lip. Pathology showed it was a less aggressive form of melanoma and described the findings as most compatible with benign behavior. We are not sure what the future brings in terms of his health and his new family needs to be prepared for all possibilities.Because of Charlie's age and medical history, his adoption fee will be a donation in the adopter's chosen amount. What matters most to us is finding the right person who sees what we see: a happy, affectionate little guy with plenty of life, love and snuggles left to give.Charlie has already lost his person once. Now he needs someone who will let him spend his next chapter exactly where he wants to be — right beside them, preferably under a blanket.
