Toby is a sweet, smart, and wonderfully scruffy little guy who is looking for a foster home for about 4–5 months through PAWS' Safety Net Program while his beloved owner recovers from an upcoming medical procedure. Toby's owner describes him as very intelligent, loving, and incredibly loyal! He already knows some commands, loves romping around a yard or stretching his legs outside on a walk, and is always happy to entertain himself with his favorite toys. But if you ask Toby what the best part of the day is? Morning cuddle time, of course since he's a firm believer that every day should begin with a little extra love before anyone gets out of bed!

Otherwise Toby can come with some strong opinions at times, and according to his owner, his primary form of communication is barking. New people? Bark. Squirrel? Bark. Another dog across the street? Definitely bark. His own shadow? Surprisingly suspicious, and bark! The good news is that while Toby likes to announce his feelings, his owner says he doesn't escalate beyond barking, and that when meeting new people he settles nicely once they've had the chance to greet him and offer a few pets.

Because walks through busy neighborhoods can be a little overwhelming for him, Toby would likely thrive in a quieter area where he can enjoy the outdoors without feeling like he has to provide neighborhood security updates. And while Toby has previously been around other animals, he isn't particularly interested in making new four-legged friends and is more of a "you do your thing, I'll do mine" kind of dog—as long as everyone respects his personal bubble (and also maybe ignores his commentary from across the street).

Like many dogs going through a big life change, Toby may need some extra patience while settling into a foster home. His owner reports that he can also sometimes whine, howl, or bark when left home alone, so a foster with a flexible schedule or someone home more often would help him adjust to his temporary routine. But otherwise he's reportedly house trained, does well with free-roam of the home, and a very good houseguest.

Toby isn't looking for too much, just a kind and patient person willing to give him a safe place to land while his owner heals. So if you have room in your home for a loyal little shadow with a big personality, a scruffy face that's impossible to resist, and plenty of love to give, Toby is ready to repay you with companionship, cuddles, and endless appreciation!

This dog is a part of our Safety Net Program, which provides safe, temporary foster care for pets whose owners are going through times of transition or crisis, typically for ~4 months. This program makes a tremendous impact on our community by keeping people with the pets they love! The pets in this program don't typically need adoption promotion unless an owner is not able to reclaim them. These dogs are typically sensitive to the stress caused by the loud shelter environment and need a loving home setting to relax and let their personalities emerge.
