Introducing our sweet Twirl girl, the cutest little peanut. Twirl is a Chicago Dog through and through - she’s a strong willed girl who has been through some challenges to get where she is today.

We first heard about Twirl back in June, where she had been at Chicago Animal Care and Control after being taken there as a stray. Twirl had become really sick with pneumonia, and she only had until 7pm that day to be rescued before she would be euthanized due to illness.

A foster stepped up, and we were able to pull her at 6:30p, just in the nick of time. When she got to Heartland, it was clear that she would require more advanced care than we could provide. Twirl spent 4 days in the ICU, getting oxygen, IV antibiotics, and overnight monitoring. She then got to go home and was nursed back to health by her wonderful foster family.

Twirl is now healthy, strong, and thriving. She has tons of enthusiasm for life, and is definitely a dog that likes to “do things!” She is loving walks at the shelter, playgroup in the big play yard, and is a puzzle/enrichment toy enthusiast. She can figure almost any puzzle out - she is a VERY smart, motivated dog. Twirl loves to train and has been working hard with our volunteer behavior team, whose members are working to teach her new obedience skills, pattern games, and practicing focusing on her handler when on walks, and exceeding expectations with all her training. Everyone who works with Twirl is so impressed by her. This girl is a genius!

Twirl does like other dogs, but it can be a lot for her to see them and not be able to freely interact with them- which is the case with many "reactive" dogs! As you can see from her pictures and videos, she does great in playgroup with the other dogs once she gets time to sniff and get to know a dog, and is a rough and rowdy player.

She will do best with a fenced in yard or a home in a less populated area where she won’t need to pass unfamiliar dogs to get her daily exercise and potty needs met.

Besides being the cutest, she is also the sweetest, and loves every person she meets. Twirl will run up to just about any person with a full body wiggle, and make them feel like they’re her best friend. She believes she is a lap dog and being the petite princess that she is, is the perfect “fit” for your lap. She’s a snuggle bunny!

Twirl is great with kids, even babies. She is SO loving and affectionate, and not in a jumpy/mouthy way, either. Twirl does not have a trace of guarding behavior; she will let you take anything from her, even her beloved frozen Kongs or bully sticks. She is just happy to have you beside her!

Twirl is docile and polite, and just the best girl!
