Some dogs don't need to be the loudest in the room to steal your heart. Hot Honey is a quiet gem. This beautiful three-year-old brindle hound mix made the journey to Heartland all the way from Kentucky after her family made the heartbreaking decision to surrender her because they could no longer care for her.
She's arrived a little too thin at just 37 pounds, but we're helping her put some healthy weight back on. Underneath that petite frame is one of the gentlest souls you'll ever meet. She is the definition of sweet and demure!
Hot Honey isn't the dog bouncing off the walls or clamoring to be the center of attention. Instead, she quietly waits her turn, watching the world with soft, soulful eyes. She is so endearing, it's hard not to fall in love.
In playgroups with other dogs, she's what we affectionately call a co-exister. She enjoys being around other dogs and happily shares space with them, but she's equally content simply doing her own thing. She's easygoing, polite, and brings a calming presence wherever she goes. Her name may be Hot Honey, but she's less "spicy" and more like a warm drizzle of honey in your tea—comforting, gentle, and exactly what you didn't know you needed.
Hot Honey has been living in a wonderful foster home. Her foster mom has great things to say about her. She writes, "She is very sweet and a gentle soul. She takes a bit to warm up to new people so when you meet her, she will not jump into your lap and beg you to love her immediately. But once she gets to know you, she will be fully devoted. An example is I had some friends over for dinner. Upon meeting them, she was quite shy. They gave her some space, and then she allowed them to pet her. Then, partway through the evening, they were her new best friends. She would go over to them looking to be petted, sit by them at the table (we are terrible about discouraging begging), and just generally wanted to be around them (and us).
She is really wonderful with kids and seems to be especially drawn to them. She is very gentle with them.
She seems to be housebroken and is getting better about pottying on walks although she is still learning and sometimes prefers to just be let out in our yard. She loves to sniff everything and explore!
She is crate trained, and actually seems to love hanging out in her crate. We put a comfy bolster bed in there, and when we are upstairs where her crate is watching tv or working, she is generally right there with us just hanging out. She goes in there at night to sleep with no complaints and is able to stay in there in the morning until one of us is up to walk her.
Right now her energy level is moderate but she likes having a ball tossed to her (she's not great at retrieving but enjoys having the ball tossed to her). She LOVES to go on walks. Overall, she is such a great dog."

Hot Honey's adoption fee is $300. She is spayed and up to date on core vaccines.
Like many dogs who come to us from the South, Hot Honey tested positive for heartworm disease. The good news is that heartworm is treatable, and she will receive her treatment through us.
Heartworm disease is common in dogs throughout the United States. It is a mosquito-borne disease and is not contagious to humans or other pets.
Heartworm disease is both preventable and curable. Once cured, a normal quality of life can be expected.
Hot Honey is currently on a 28 day course of antibiotics, after which she will receive three injections to treat her Heartworm (the first one will be on 8/24, with the next two on 9/22 and 9/23). All treatments will take place at our shelter with our veterinarian.
That will complete the treatment, but she will need a quick retest at the adopter's vet 9 months post-treatment to make sure that she is Heartworm-free.
