Meet dalton
** If you are interested in adopting Dalton, please fill out our adoption application at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ **
Dalton is a stunning, around 4 or 5 year old, 14-pound purebred longhaired Dachshund.
With his gorgeous coat, short legs, and classic weenie charm, he’s the kind of dog that makes everyone want to scoop him up and snuggle him close. But.... Dalton just isn’t that kind of dog (at least not yet!).
Dalton is a sensitive, independent little guy who knows exactly what he likes… and what he doesn’t. He’s not a fan of being picked up or fussed over, and he’ll let you know when he’s had enough affection. According to the New Mexico shelter that assessed him, this isn’t fear-based — he’s not trembling or cowering — he simply has strong opinions about personal space! Dalton will need an experienced, dog-savvy adopter who understands canine body language and can respect his boundaries while gently helping him build trust. Over time, Dalton will warm up and accept pets on his own terms, but it’s important to understand that even then, he might still decide when he’s “done.”
What Dalton does love is the company of other animals! He’s wonderful with other dogs and even cats, and he truly thrives around them. We believe he’d do best in a home with another friendly, balanced dog who can help show him the ropes and offer companionship without the pressure of constant human affection.
It’s hard to believe, but this gorgeous boy was found as a stray in New Mexico, and shockingly, no one ever came to claim him. He was still intact when rescued, which makes us suspect he may have been used for breeding before escaping that life. We’ll never know his full story, but we do know this: Dalton deserves a home where he’s loved for exactly who he is — quirks, boundaries, and all.
Dalton is also very food motivated, which is a huge plus when it comes to helping him build trust and confidence. Treats are absolutely the way to his heart, and his love of snacks will make training and positive reinforcement much easier. With patience, structure, and plenty of tasty rewards, Dalton will start to associate people with all good things — and that’s where the real progress begins.
Dalton arrives to Colorado on Wednesday, November 19th, and will be coming home with one of our team members for foster care so we can get to know him better firsthand. Because of his “sassiness” and sensitivity, we want to make sure we fully understand what he needs before placing him. For that reason, we will not be reviewing adoption applications for Dalton until after his arrival, and he won’t be ready for adoption until the following week, once we’ve spent some time assessing him in a calm, loving home environment.
Dalton will do best in a quiet, low-traffic home without children and without frequent visitors or social gatherings. He needs a calm, predictable environment where he can feel safe and in control — and a person who appreciates a dog with strong boundaries and a big personality packed into a small, gorgeous package.
We'd like to place Dalton in a home where he'll get consistent stimulation and with someone willing to work with a trainer for their newly rescued dog. A (virtual or in-person) positive reinforcement group training class promotes great behavior, bonding and confidence. Training is so important in the future behaviors of every dog. It's for this reason that we're unwilling to adopt to a family that doesn't make this loving choice. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of both in-person and virtual positive reinforcement / force- free trainers in your area.
Farfel's Rescue is a fully foster based rescue, and offers a one week trial with every adoption. We feel that this is much more beneficial to not only the dog, but the adopter too. We believe that only getting 20-30 minutes with a dog before deciding on a lifetime commitment is not a fair amount of time to the adopter, or the dog. Therefore we give adopters one week with the dog to assure it is the right fit, and offer a full refund of their adoption fee should it not workout within the week trial.
Farfel's Rescue has been doing adoptions this way since 2005 and is thrilled to adopt out ~400 dogs each year.
Applications are currently being accepted for our wonderful pup. If interested in this gorgeous, very cuddly/sweet and loving best friend, please fill out an application completely at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ and submit.
**PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting from us, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in many cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.
