Meet gaston

Gaston (approximately 52 pounds) was transferred to the NHSPCA from our friends at Humane World for Animals in Maryland. He was rescued from a home where he was living with forty - yes, 40! - other dogs, and he is known to be very dog social. When it comes to humans, he is a sweet but very shy fellow who is quite shut down. This is understandable considering the situation that he came from and the instability he has felt throughout his life. He is believed to be an Australian Cattle Dog/Boxer mix, but as his parentage is unknown, this breed mix is a guess.Gaston is looking for an adopter who understands that building trust takes time. This person will recognize what a special dog he is and will be willing to put in the effort of helping Gaston feel safe & loved. If you sit with Gaston and offer him gentle talk, treats, and calm affection, he obviously wants to make a connection. He'll often reward people with hesitant tail wags and sometimes even kisses!Gaston is not the kind of dog who will be comfortable overnight. He may need time to feel safe, learn his new routine, and discover that he can trust the people around him. His future family will need to be patient, give him plenty of space, and allow him to approach things at his own pace rather than rushing interactions or expecting immediate affection. Some days may bring little steps forward, while others may require taking things a bit slower, and that's okay! The most important thing is giving Gaston the time and understanding he needs to settle in and feel secure.A quieter home with a calm environment and predictable routine may be the best fit for this sensitive guy. He would benefit from someone willing to let a relationship develop naturally, celebrating the small victories along the way. With patience, consistency, and a gentle approach, Gaston will have the opportunity to build confidence and form a meaningful bond with his new family. If you're willing to meet him where he is, give him the time he needs, and let trust grow at his own pace, Gaston would be a wonderful companion to welcome into your life. ❤️The NHSPCA Adoption Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM and Thursday from 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM (closed Wednesdays).
