Meet scout
Meet Scout! This poor puppy has been through more than a 1 year old dog should but he is such a sweet little boy. This boy has such a big heart, and is a total love bug once he learns that he is safe!
Scout is a 1 year old, 13 lb Shih Tzu / Poodle mix. (His foster thinks he may be more like 10 months - 1 year old). Farfel's can't swear to the accuracy of his breed mix as no DNA test was done. It was the opinion of New Mexico veterinarians and we're going to stay with their educated guess.
Scout was picked up as a stray in New Mexico and he was extremely matted. When they shaved his matted hair off, they saw that his left eye was bulging out of its socket, and unfortunately it could not be saved. Understandably, he was confused getting picked up off the streets, going into a scary shelter, and loosing an eye. But he has been adjusting very well since getting to Colorado, and into foster care.
Scout can be a little shy when meeting new people, but he is never rude or aggressive at all. He is such a lover boy at heart and when he warms up to you he turns into a total puppy!! He is the sweetest, silliest boy ever (coming from his foster who loves him SO MUCH!)
We learned that having a friendly dog buddy in the home makes a huge difference for this sweet boy! We’ve seen firsthand just how much and how fast Scout blossoms in a home with another dog, and how slow and nervous he is in a home without another dog. In a foster home with a dog friend, Scout warmed up to his foster mom and her husband in just a day or 2. He loves playing with and snuggling up to his foster's dog, and quickly became a much happier, more confident little guy.
Having another dog around helps Scout feel safe and gives him a friend to show him the ropes while he learns to trust his new people. Because we’ve seen how much having a doggy friend helps him feel comfortable and secure, Scout will need a home with another friendly, welcoming dog.
We are not willing to put Scout's comfortability aside and adopt him to a home without another dog.

"Scout started off super shy, but warmed up so fast. And by started off shy, I really just mean he was a bit hesitant of me. The second he got home and saw my dogs, he RAN out of his crate and straight to my dogs. Oh my gosh, he LOVES my dogs!!!
He MUST go to a home with another PLAYFUL dog. Scout has total young dog / puppy energy and love love loves to play with my dogs!
He took a few days to really warm up to us humans in the home - he is still a little stiff if I pick him up, but he got comfortable pretty fast and even loves to snuggle and fall asleep with his head on my lap. He NEVER even from day 1 showed ANY signs of aggression. I could pick him up and he didn't love it (like it just scared him) but he never tried to nip or anything. He is such a pure heart baby!
After a few days, he was very very settled and his personality came right out! He is definitely a young dog, and a total puppy! Loves to play, loves toys, if you give him your hand to play with he will gnaw on it like a puppy but will happily take a toy instead. He LOVES toys - all kinds!
He is totally crate trained and sleeps in his crate quietly at night (though I think he would love to sleep in bed if you let him). He does stay in his crate when we leave the house, but we left him loose last time we ran errands and he did totally fine so definitely does not need the crate!
He picked up the potty training fast and while I wouldn't say he is fully potty trained yet, he is certainly almost there! By day 3 he felt comfortable following me and my dogs outside to our yard to potty. The first few days I carried him out with us and had him on a leash, but after a few days he wanted to follow us out! He has literally 1 pee accident a day, maybe, and that's all. But he never marks!! Thank god! And he poops outside every time! I even was telling him this morning to come back inside with us because everyone else was done and going inside and he looked at me, looked back at the yard, then went poop before coming inside. He's such a good boy!!!
Oh - and come to think of it, I have never heard him bark!! Have not heard a peep out of this dog (yet)!
We learned today, after about a week with this sweetie that he might prefer his main person to be a female. When I'm home he's not nervous anymore, and doesn't act skittish with my husband, but I left him home with my husband (and dogs) the other day while I went to work and he was super nervous all day with my husband, until I got home! He comes to work with me now (and does great!) but maybe his primary person should be a female, as he warms up faster and is more comfortable with us. Though I am sure with time he will learn to warm up when alone with my (or anyone's) husband, haha.
So give Scout a few days to really warm up. He can be a bit nervous about human touch that's not on his terms until he's warmed up. Also if you reach for him or pet him from his blind side you may startle him. But you will not regret being a bit patient the first few days once this absolute silly sweetheart comes out of his shell!"

This sweet guy, with a gorgeous shed-free coat (excellent for those with allergy concerns ) will require a lifelong commitment to periodic grooming and excellent nutrition. Current research is very clear that the best diet we can provide for our pets is a fresh, human grade natural diet. Farfel's recommends Chi Diet (chidog.com) due to our personal experience with our own dogs. It's one of the most important choices we make for our dogs great health and longevity.
Since Scout is just a young guy, he's a blank slate just waiting for a kind and patient human to show him the way. He has all the potential in the world to be an awesome and loving best friend. Scout will form firm bonds with his family and learn socialization skills through virtual or in-person positive reinforcement / force-free Obedience Classes. These classes will make a profound difference in a young dog's ultimate behavior and in his relationship / bonding with his people. It does take time and commitment, yet pays off a thousand times over when you have a dog that can accompany you out in the world with excellent behavior.
Farfel's Rescue feels very strongly that every dog deserves the opportunity for formal virtual or in-person positive reinforcement / force-free training classes. We therefore aren't willing to adopt Scout out to a home that doesn't choose to offer him this training opportunity. Farfel's is happy to provide a list of approved virtual and in-person positive reinforcement / force-free trainers in your area.
Because Scout is a bit unsure and learning to trust, though he is a sweet boy, we know that he would be too overwhelmed in a home with kids.
Scout will be up to date on his vetting / vaccinations to be in line with our commitment to only adopting out healthy dogs. He has also been neutered to support Farfel's commitment to a euthanasia - free future in the canine population.
Applications are currently being accepted for this sweet as can be pup. An adoption application can be found at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/. If interested, please fill out completely and submit.
**PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting Scout, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in many cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.
