ABOUT WELCHES
Earlier this year, at an adoption event, our team met a partner shelter that had just one dog left waiting for a home, Welches. We simply couldn't bear the thought of her making the trip back alone, so she left the event with the HAP team instead! Welches came to us from Currituck Animal Shelter in North Carolina, where she had been found as a stray in May. Typically, stray animals are placed on a mandatory hold, giving owners time to reclaim them while limiting the medical care shelters can provide. But Welches' condition was far too severe to wait. She was rushed to a specialty veterinarian with a nearly 5-pound mass growing from her shoulder. The weight of the mass had literally torn her skin, leaving it attached by only a narrow stem. And if you're wondering how she got the name Welches...that stem had multiple large masses hanging from it, looking just like a bunch of grapes. Thankfully, her surgery was a tremendous success, allowing Welches to make the journey to Delaware for the Adoption Event and, ultimately, to HAP.

Since arriving, Welches has completely stolen our hearts. She's affectionate, intelligent, and incredibly loyal. She has an impressive recall, will dramatically throw herself into a sit when asked, and is always eager to please. Friendly with everyone she meets, Welches has all the makings of the perfect cuddle and adventure buddy!
While she can be a bit of a bossy lady with other dogs, she's selective about her canine companions. With the right match, she could share her home with another dog, but she'd be just as content soaking up all the love and attention as your one and only!
At just over 8 years old, Welches may technically be a senior, but don't let that fool you, this goofy girl still has plenty of pep in her step! She loves zooming around our fenced fields, tossing squeaky toys into the air, and enjoying leisurely afternoon walks. She walks beautifully on a leash, redirects easily with treats or praise, already knows her basic commands, and appears to be house-trained. After everything she's overcome, Welches is finally ready for the one thing she's been waiting for all along, a family to call her own!

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.
