Meet available - marley

Socialization: Marley is a friendly girl. She can be a bit selective with meeting new people while on leash and may bark with suspicion, especially with children. She likes getting pets and giving kisses, and is still learning to not jump on people during greetings. Marley is good with other dogs and likes to run around and sniff. She completely ignores cats and is trustworthy around them. Marley was raised with her littermate, Lettie, as well as other breeds of dogs, cats, and chickens. She was raised with children (unknown ages).

Training: Marley knows how to sit and shake and is practicing “stay” and “settle”. Once provided ample off-leash play and birdwatching time, she is great in the house and wants to cuddle up with you or lay at your feet. She is completely house trained and has not had any accidents in the house. She does have a habit of counter surfing and needs supervision around the kitchen. She mostly wants to watch birds out the windows, or nap with you on the couch/bed. Marley was raised as a hunting dog and will point at birds.

Crate trained: Marley was stated to be crate trained in her prior home. Her home life changes may have caused some regression with this, so she will need continued reinforcement that her crate is a safe and comfy place. She will go into her crate with a treat as a bribe, and will settle down after some time. She does not chew her bedding and is ok in the crate for several hours. She can easily scale a baby gate if there is something she wants on the other side. Because of this and her counter surfing, I would be reluctant to leave her to free roam, but provided a safe, secure environment I could see that as a potential.

Leash trained: I do not believe Marley had much leash experience in her life prior to rescue. She has a tendency to pull and zig zag. She stops to point at birds, but will chase squirrels, rabbits, and other small mammals. She has made a lot of progress with leash reactivity with other dogs and with some calming from the handler will refrain from barking. I think with more time and practice she will become a great leash walker.

Activity level/requirements: Marley needs a fenced in area to run and watch for birds. She enjoys her leash walks and runs, but only truly gets her energy out from off-leash time. She loves to be your side so naturally has great recall, but would need further testing to confirm this. Marley needs daily off-leash exercise then settles great in the house and is ready to cuddle by your side.

Fence requirements: Marley would be happy with a family that would give her daily access to an off leash secured area where she can run and play. A fenced in yard would be great, but access to a fenced in park or fields would also be acceptable. Marley can easily scale a 4 ft fence so should not be left unattended in an area with lower fences.

Personality: Marley’s best quality is her sweet personality. She loves to be with you at all times. She is affectionate and loves to give kisses. She will join you on the couch and loves to lay with her head on your chest or in the nape of your neck. She warms up to her people quickly and forms a strong bond. With this strong bond comes a little bit of separation anxiety, but can be avoided with a family who wants a dog always by your side.

Health history: UTD on vaccinations, is spayed/neutered, microchipped, & on monthly heartworm preventative. She is completing a course of antibiotics after a diagnosis of Lyme and anaplasmosis (asymptomatic). She is heartworm negative. She came to rescue underweight but is nearing her weight goal.

Foster comments: Marley is very high energy dog that settles well with sufficient exercise. She loves people and wants to be around her family most of the time. She would do well in a home with other dogs or as an only dog. She would love a family who has access to outdoor spaces for her to run around in and watch birds. She would love a home that allows her access to sofas and beds for cuddle time. Marley will make a loving companion for a family!

Foster Location: Huntsville, AL

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home.
