captain

Captain is a sweet boy who is 1 - 1 1/2 years old. He is a standard poodle/great Pyrenees mix.

Captain is a big-hearted, loyal dog that came from a situation where there were over 100 dogs so he didn’t get much one-on-one interaction with the people. He is worried about people at first and it takes a few days for him to open up and start to feel comfortable. But trust us, after he opens up you will see a whole different boy.

Captain is full of love and affection towards his people. Unfortunately, he hadn’t learned a calm way to show it but he has been working on more appropriate ways in his foster home. He is not perfect but a lot better than before. He still nibbles on hands or clothes like a naughty pony when he wants your attention, and he is still quite bouncy when excited.

At the same time, Captain is surprisingly calm and self-contained most of the time and only requires moderate exercise. He is something of a pocket mouse and will often hang out where he can keep an eye on his person/people without being clingy or needy.

In spite of his past, his level-headedness, adaptability, and all-round great personality clearly shows.
Captain likes toys though he hasn’t learned to fetch it yet. A favorite activity is lazing around in a comfortable spot in the yard while you do your own thing there; he makes a great supervisor for any garden enthusiast.

Captain does fine with car rides and enjoys going fun places. He has started doing off-leash hikes with his foster mom and her own dogs and he has done very well. He is also great on leash and ignores most things that pass by such as bikes, and it is quite easy to get him to walk by other dogs in a calm manner.

Captain is crate trained, house trained, and uses a doggie door. He is super with dogs of all sizes, cats, horses, goats, and lamas. He is perfectly fine being left loose in the house when home alone, and in his foster home he usually has access to the back yard as well.

He seems to view adults and children about the same, which means he is anxious about unfamiliar people of all ages approaching or paying him direct attention but okay if they leave him alone until he is ready to make contact. While he can get comfortable with children he sees regularly we do not think he is a good fit for a family with active, young children as their movements and energy may trigger his rough-and-tumble playstyle or his defensiveness.

While Captain rarely shows resource guarding, and then only when he doesn’t want to share one of his people, his guardian breed side sometimes shows up in his readiness to defend the home and his charges be it pets or people. It’s great for protection but not so much in a household that frequently has friends and family enter the house by themselves.
