Meet snowball (deaf)

Snowball is a gentle, loving girl with a tender heart and a deep capacity for devotion. She is hearing-impaired and only detects very sharp sounds, so she relies on visual cues and a few simple hand signals to communicate. Because she can’t hear voices, she may seem cautious when first meeting new people — but once she feels safe and understands your love, she bonds deeply and will happily become your constant little copilot. Snowball grew up around larger dogs, but being unable to hear makes her easily startled, so she would feel most secure as the only dog in the home. In a calm, predictable environment where she can relax and build trust at her own pace, her sweet personality truly shines. She enjoys running around the yard, going for walks or hikes, and curling up on the couch for quiet companionship. Snowball isn’t looking for chaos — she’s looking for her person. Once she chooses you, her loyalty is absolute, and she will stay faithfully by your side through everything. We estimate Snowball is about 2 years old. Her adoption fee includes her spay, vaccines, deworming, and microchip.  Snowball would thrive in a calm home in the Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, White Rock, or Los Alamos area with a patient individual or family who understands that trust is built gently and lovingly over time. The reward is extraordinary: a deeply devoted companion who will love you with her whole heart. If you believe Snowball could be the missing piece in your life, please email desertpawsnm@gmail.com to check availability and begin the application process. We would be honored to introduce you to this beautiful girl and help her find the safe, peaceful home she so deeply deserves.   A note about having a deaf family dog: (a good reference is Deaf Dogs Rock) “these dogs are not 'broken' but simply communicate differently, using high-value treats, hand signals, and intense visual connection to bond. 'Twists' include dogs previously labeled 'bad listeners' (actually deaf) becoming ideal, highly trained family members, or, in one case, a blind/deaf dog playing a key role in a wedding. “   Key Aspects of Fostering Deaf Dogs: Communication: Rely on hand signals, facial expressions, and body language rather than verbal commands. Bonding: Deaf dogs often form an intense, trust-based bond with their handlers, making them highly attuned to their environment. Misconceptions: They are often overlooked or deemed 'unadoptable' in shelters, but frequently turn out to be affectionate and trainable. Common 'Twist': Many foster parents who expect a difficult experience end up keeping the dog ('foster fail') due to the deep and wonderful connection formed.   Memorable Deaf Dog Stories: The Wedding Guest: Benjamin, a deaf and blind dog, walked between his foster parents at their wedding ceremony. The 'Bad Listener': A dog returned for being a 'bad listener' was found to be deaf, eventually becoming a cherished, well-trained pet. The Therapy Dog: A deaf dog named Cole became a therapy dog, using his focus to support children.   These stories highlight that while they require specialized, often visual-based training, deaf dogs are capable of bringing joy and deep connection to their guardians/family.March 2, 2026, 5:58 pm
