🤍Meet Rio, a “Sato dog” from Puerto Rico! A “Sato dog” refers to the mixed breed, stray dogs on the island. (Majority are small-medium size but some can be larger). Island dogs are smart, loyal, highly trainable, and thrive on routines and consistency. They have wonderful demeanors, make devoted companions, adjust well to their environments, and are a perfect mix of energetic and affectionate. There is no love like the love of an island dog.

(Day #6 update: 2/22/26): Rio was rescued on New Year’s Eve by an Airbnb on the beach in Las Picuas, PR. He suffered terrible mange, was in horrible shape, and overall defeated. He has powered through with an incredible recovery and quickly showed his appreciation and bright spirit. Fast forwarding, Rio is healthy, happy, affectionate, playful, food motivated, eager to learn, and truly adores people. He holds a sweet soul with a wonderful disposition and an outgoing personality. If you enjoy kisses, he has plenty to go around! Rio shares his foster home with two dogs, (one being a Sato), one cat, two kids (ages 6 and 7), and exposure to chickens and goats. Rio gets along well with his foster cat friend, loves his doggie friends, interacts with ease, and has an adorable friendship. He gets along well with kids and was introduced to a three year old and did great. Rio has picked up on cues well and has settled in quickly. He has caught on fast learning all the ropes and routines. He is doing exceptional with crate training/bedtime, potty training, and walks nicely on his leash. This sweet boy will make an amazing companion and we are excited to see him continue to thrive. (Mom and Dad are unknown).
