Dog Name: Barbie
Breed: Mixed Breed
Sex: Female
DOB: 2 years
Weight: 45 lbs.
Medical Needs: Routine shots, as well as flea/tick/heartworm preventative meds. She was recently spayed and still needs to wear a cone when unsupervised.
House Broken: Reliably housebroken.
Crate Trained: She rests quietly in her pen/crate area and enters it happily. It's a safe place for her.
Good in Car: This seems to be a new experience, she's a bit reluctant to load up and needs encouragement. Once she's in, she's OK, if still a little anxious. Repetition should lead to improvement.
Good on a Leash: Yes, still a new thing though.
Energy Level: Medium-high. She loves to run, and will stretch her body out long for it, the way you would see at a horse race. There's a real joy in it. In her pen, she's quiet and very well behaved, she manages her energy well.
Need a Fenced in Yard: No, but boy, oh boy, she'd LOVE it.
Dog Friendly: Yes, she's good with other dogs, AFTER a proper introduction. She's got a good set of hackles, which display her anxiety with new dogs.
If Yes, does your dog need another dog in its adoptive home? No, but she would love it if there is one.
Cat Friendly: Unknown. Rescue can arrange for cat testing for approved applicants.
Kid Friendly: Unknown, but she's quite gentle, so I expect she'd be fine.
If Yes, What's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Any age with supervision.
Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Barbie came into rescue from an auction in Hartley, Delaware. She was initially shutdown and reluctant to trust but obviously eager for love and affection. She now follows me whenever she can. Her behavior indicates that humans have not always been kind to her. It might take sometime for her to fully relax into you and trust, but it is very evident that she wants to have that connection. Stairs make her nervous, but she is getting used to them. She is a little overweight, but starting to trim down with exercise and smaller portions. When she enters the house, she heads straight to her penned area. It is obviously her safe space. She has no commands, but is cooperative and smart enough to learn (we are working on Sit). Barbie will do best in a home with someone(s) with an active life style and that will drain her energy tank regularly. She should have some safe chew toys of her own, rather than letting her pick something out for herself. If I had to make a guess as to breeds... she has some of the look of a Jack Russell and the behavior of a bird dog, I've seen her freeze in a 'point' multiple times. Love + Available time will make Barbie a very happy girl. Since she does not respond to 'Barbie', I have to assume she would prefer a different one. She's a all around "good egg".
