Meet Oscar

Oscar is a very special boy who has made incredible progress and continues to blossom in the right environment. We are so proud of how far he has come.

Oscar is completely deaf, and while imaging (CT/MRI) shows no structural defects, we suspect there may be some additional neurological impact from a past accident — or he may simply have been born this way. What we do know is that Oscar experiences the world a little differently… and he does it with a huge heart.

He thrives on routine and predictability. A consistent schedule helps him feel safe and confident. He loves food, adores cozying up by a fireplace in the winter, enjoys baths, and is happily crate trained. He also loves playing with his buddy Phineas.

Oscar continues to work through anxiety around strangers. He is not a dog who will immediately greet new people — he needs time and space. Typically, it takes about a day for him to feel comfortable enough to take a treat from someone new. Within 1–2 days, he’ll happily sit beside a new person on the couch — as long as they allow him to initiate touch. Once he chooses you, his affection is deep and genuine. He is incredibly loving and very sensitive.

Because he is deaf, he can miss social cues from other dogs. When excited, he runs with pure joy — sometimes barreling through the house without much awareness of who might be in his path. He can become overstimulated and may push past other dogs if he wants something. He also fiercely guards high-value treats. However, he responds well to clear boundaries and hand signals, including a firm “no” signal from his person.

Oscar does not chase cats.

He would do best in a calm, structured home with an experienced adopter who understands shy or neurologically unique dogs. An adult-only home or one without frequent visitors would be ideal. He could thrive as an only dog, or with another easygoing dog of similar age and energy level who can tolerate Oscar’s excitement and doesn’t take offense to his occasional social awkwardness.

Oscar is not a “plug-and-play” dog — he is a relationship dog. He bonds deeply. He feels deeply. And in the right home, with patience and routine, he will give a loyalty and love that is truly extraordinary.

If you believe that some of the most special dogs are the ones who need just a little extra understanding, Oscar may be your heart dog.
