Meet sugar

Meet Sugar!Sugar arrived to us via an owner surrender when her family faced medical issues, and she's settled in with a friendly, bouncy personality. She likes to set the pace - coming for pets when she's ready - and is affectionate, wiggly and happy to lean into head rubs. Sugar can be a little particular about her food, toys and bedding, so she does best with predictable handling and clear boundaries. My Ideal HomeSugar would thrive in an adult-only home with someone patient and consistent. A calm, predictable routine, confidence-building training (especially around resource guarding) and enrichment like puzzle toys or scent work will help her feel secure. She does well with structured introductions to new dogs and benefits from adopters who will continue positive reinforcement and trade-up work for food/toy guarding. A household that gives her space when she wants it and rewards voluntary interactions will make her happiest.Good with Kids?No - not recommended for young children. Sugar prefers limited, respectful interactions and can be shy; shelter staff recommend a home without children under 13 so she can relax and have interactions on her terms.Good with Other Pets?Dogs: Generally dog-friendly - she's playful and outgoing with many unfamiliar dogs, enjoys chase play and can be tolerant of body contact. Supervised, gradual introductions are recommended, and handlers should watch for signs of stress around some male dogs. Sugar previously lived with another dog. Cats: No known experience, so introductions should be done cautiously and slowly.Leash MannersSugar walks nicely on leash with very little pulling and enjoys short daily walks. She's used to multiple brief outings each day and also loves car rides. Continued loose-leash practice and positive reinforcement will keep her walking well.Overall HealthHealthy overall and comfortable in the shelter environment; she's been assessed by our team and is doing well physically.Behavior DeterminationLevel 3 - Best suited to adopters with experience or willingness to follow behavior guidance. Sugar displays some resource guarding and anxiety-related appeasement behaviors, so she benefits from calm, consistent handling, training to manage guarding, and enrichment to build confidence.Other Fun FactsSugar is a charming mix of couch potato and playful pal - she loves to roll over for pets, expose her belly, and engage in chase.
