Meet reba- loves dogs, not people

We don’t know exactly what happened in Reba’s past, but we know it was nothing good. She came in as a “stray” to a local inner city animal control, with many old scars and a ripped ear. But the worst scars run much deeper. She was terrified of human touch, leashes, and pretty much everything and just ricocheted off her kennel walls trying to escape and lunging and snapping at anyone who attempted to touch her.

She’s been with us for a little bit and she’s still a slow work in progress. She seems like she’s survived a hoarding situation or maybe actually was on the streets for a while in survival mode. She will come up and take treats from us, runs around the yard following her little doggie friends looking happy, but still panics being handled or leashed and is convinced human hands will cause her harm. She’s a tiny Jack Russell/toy fox terrier/rat terrier type, about 10lbs, maybe 5 years old, and has been spayed and updated on shots. She will definitely need a very patient person that will give her time and space to learn to trust on her own terms and accept that she may never be a cuddle bug. She definitely needs a home with at least one other small dog friend to follow and help her feel secure.

If you are looking for a feral cat in a dog’s body, a project who will go at her own pace and can’t be rushed or smothered with affection but still watches and relies on you, email njwoof@cs.com to meet Reba in Northern NJ

Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.
