When Chicago Animal Care and Control reached out about five severely neglected dogs in desperate need, we had no idea just how heartbreaking their condition would be. Jamaica, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Patra, and Reggae — all under 2 years old — had clearly spent their short lives in unimaginable filth, pain, and neglect.Their coats were so matted, tightly pulling at their skin, that several had to be sedated just to be shaved. The smell of urine and feces was overwhelming — a painful reminder of how forgotten they’d been. Once we could finally see the dogs beneath the tangles, we discovered Reggae had a large growth on his eye that required immediate surgery to remove it.They were rushed to our vets, cleaned up by our patient groomers, and shown compassion — maybe for the very first time.Now, they need something more — a home. A kind, patient family who will give them the safety and affection they’ve always deserved.
