Meet poppy

Meet Poppy, a sweet special needs girl with a will to live! She is 2 years old and weighs around 55 lbs.

Poppy came to the rescue after being found tie to a car bumper in rural Oklahoma and rescued by an organization local to the area. During her two months in boarding with a vet where she was found, it was noticed she was having trouble holding food down and she kept losing weight. After our suspicions and x-rays at our vet, it was confirmed – Poppy has megaesophagus.

She was in pretty rough shape when we got her, from the lack of vital nutrients her body needed. But that was quickly a distant memory and Poppy has been on the mend since coming to Mutts. Poppy is the sweetest, most gentle dog! She does get the zoomies and “pittie plays” (if you own a pittie you know), but she adores everyone…even cats!

With her megaesophagus, Poppy requires blended meals, as she cannot eat anything formed or solid. So, her kibble is soaked before each meal then blended to a slurry consistency for her to eat in her chair. She takes two meds to help with the megaesophagus and will need to remain on those meds for her lifetime (Sildenafil 20mg twice per day and metoclopramide 10mg twice per day, estimated cost is under $30/month). She also sits in her chair for 20 minutes after eating and an adopter will need to invest in a Bailey chair for her. With proper management of her condition, she has been doing great and putting on weight and not having any regurgitation episodes.

Poppy does have a couple of quirks (aside from the megaesophagus) that potential adopters need to account for – she has a little bit of kennel anxiety. A regular kennel will not do and an adopter will need to get a heavy-duty kennel. She also takes a med to help keep her calm in her kennel while her foster mom is at work. Poppy can jump a fence so she'll need a home with a 6 ft privacy fence (no chain link). She is working to learn that this is not acceptable, but will need monitoring in a future home while outside to keep her safe and secure.

Due to her special condition, Poppy is only eligible for a local adoption (Oklahoma). Additionally, potential adopters need to be open to a home visit to make sure the environment is one Poppy can thrive in.
